The Port of Olympia completed an Airport Master Plan Update (MPU) for the Olympia Airport in early 2025. The MPU discusses, proposes, promotes and outlines Port plans for development at the Olympia Airport to lure and accommodate significant increases in aircraft operations and flights over Thurston County.
The Port also issued an environmental review under the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) of the MPU as well as an official Mitigated Determination of Nonsignificance (MDNS) in which the Port declared that the MPU would have no significant adverse impacts beyond mitigation measures discussed in the review.
The MDNS for the MPU was appealed by a local environmental group and numerous citizens of Thurston County.
After a lengthy appeal process in which citizens and expert witnesses testified, the Hearing Examiner issued a Decision that the MDNS was indeed insufficient.
Victory for Appellants: On May 14th, 2026 the Port of Olympia withdrew the MDNS.
Unfortunately this does not mean the Port of Olympia has given up its vision for expansion of airport operations at our expense; Planning to accommodate increased airport operations no doubt continues.
This website will be updated when the Port notifies the public of further plans for expansion of airport infrastructure and operations.
Also, an active, ongoing discussion pertaining to airport issues has been occurring on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1433353671691147
“We are concerned that the type of abnormalities we saw with night-time aircraft noise might result in increased risk of heart problems and stroke”. Did you know that unlike some airports, the Olympia Airport has no restrictions on night time flying?
",,, Residents living near noisy airports had 10% to 20% worse heart structure and function, compared to people who moved to get away from the aircraft noise, according to results published Jan. 8 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology..."

What We Can Do
We can show up, speak out, and write to all our Thurston County elected officials. The city, county, and the Port. Write letters to the editor, post on Facebook and NextDoor. Get the word out to friends and neighbors. Tell them we want the Port of Olympia to:
Stop plans that allow or encourage increased operations at the Olympia Airport.
Control the hours of operation and concentration of impacts over neighborhoods and Parks.
Return to local control over the airport.
Make neighborhoods impacted by the airport equal stakeholders with the aviation interests.
Seek alternatives for more sustainable transportation, such as rail.
Quit using our tax dollars to subsidize aviation interests.
Care about future generations.
In addition to the volunteers who run this website, others concerned about and opposing growth of Olympia Airport operations maintain an active Facebook page.

Many at the Port claim that they have no say over the Olympia airport because the FAA preempts them.
Is that true? Read this story:

The draft Master Plan Update (MPU) is very lengthy and unavailable as a single document that would allow searching for a term or word or name. Instead, you have to click on each individual chapter one at a time and search each one. And there is no table of contents anywhere, thus making it much harder to scrutinize, compare different sections, and so on. This is not a public-friendly document.
